Project SEARCH is a transition high school with over 200 host sites worldwide that is designed to assist youth with disabilities reach their goals of community employment. Avera Marshall has generously offered to be the host partner for a program in southwest Minnesota during the 2013-14 school year. The Avera Marshall program has been developed through the cooperation of several organizations that have been meeting regularly since the summer of 2011. It is based on a successful international program developed at Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center in 1996. The program serves as an opportunity for students to transition from high school to community employment by working Monday to Friday, from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. during the school year. Students will be provided an opportunity to participate in a variety of 8-10 week internship rotations at Avera that best meet their interests, experiences and abilities. A job coach, program instructor, and department staff work with the students (and IEP team) to help them develop the necessary interpersonal and job skills to gain meaningful employment.
Student applications will be accepted through February 8, 2013. Interviews will be scheduled in March 2013 and up to 8 program participants will be chosen for the first year of operation. Project SEARCH participants will be invited to an orientation in August 2013 and the program will officially begin serving students in August/September 2013.
