Aquaponics,
sports and entertainment marketing, personal finance, vet science,
independent living, economics, and business law are examples of classes
students can take in our local high schools. In addition to their
regular coursework, over 2,100 students in the MN West Carl Perkins
Consortium participate and compete in Business Professionals of America
(BPA), Future Farmers of America (FFA), or Family, Career and Community
Leaders of America (FCCLA.) This is all thanks to Career and Technical
Education (CTE.)
Students
and faculty in our local high schools will join others across the
nation during the month of February to celebrate national Career and
Technical Education (CTE) Month. This year’s theme is Celebrate CTE Superheroes! CTE
Month provides CTE programs across the country an opportunity to
demonstrate how CTE educates students to be college- and career- ready
and prepares them for high-wage, high-demand career fields.
CTE
encompasses 94 percent of high school students and 13 million post-secondary students in the United States and includes high schools,
career centers, community and technical colleges, four-year universities
and more. CTE
is a major part of the solution to myriad national economic and
workforce problems, such as high school dropout rates, a weakened
economy, global competitiveness and massive layoffs. According
to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, nearly one-third of the fastest
growing occupations will require an associate’s degree or a post-secondary vocational certificate. At a time when job opportunity is
so critical, CTE programs in every community are ensuring students are
adequately equipped with the skills to successfully enter the
workforce.
The Minnesota West Carl Perkins Consortium is
comprised of 40 high schools and 5 post-secondary campuses. Staff from
the SW/WC Service Cooperative, Minnesota River Valley Education
District (MRVED), and Minnesota West Community and Technical College
work together, with help from our partners, to provide a variety of
resources to consortium schools to improve the quality of technical
education and provide career development opportunities for learners of
all ages. For more information, visit www.swsc.org/carlperkins.
