The Schwan Food Company Culinary Skills Challenge

250 students from 14 schools attended the annual Culinary Skills Challenge at SMSU on April 1.  The Schwan Food Company served as the title sponsor and provided the keynote speaker as well as several judges and presenters.  Students could participate in 7 competition areas and 9 different breakout sessions.  Competitions are judged by chefs or other professionals from the culinary industry.  Students who aren't competing may attend presentations about a variety of food related topics.  Often the sessions are intended to expose students to a new food like pork tacos, gnocchi or sushi.  Sometimes they learn a new technique or skill like decorating with fondant.  And sometimes they learn about possible job opportunities in the industry like food styling, culinology or the physiology of taste and flavor.
