The Graduate Professional Development for Educators (GPDE) program offers professional development courses for K-12 educators seeking graduate credits. Courses open to all. No application process required.
GPDE 5374: But I am not a Reading Teacher...
(3 cr.) This online course focuses on the development of literacy (reading, writing, speaking, and listening) in the middle and high school grades, particularly through the use of textbook, journals, reports, references and other non-fiction materials. Teaching methods that develop strategic reading and writing of information texts and comprehension for understanding and engagement will be explored. We will also explore the ways that middle and secondary schools can provide responsive and quality adolescent literacy within content area course and programs, with consideration of the Common Cores State Standards for literacy, grades 6-12.
